In our ongoing partnership with Torrance-South Bay YMCA (Y), Torrance Refining Company LLC (TORC) presented the 29th Annual Kids Classic Golf Tournament this past summer, rallying business partners and community support to help local youth return to experiencing the Y’s life-changing programs and activities, which were paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic curtailing in-person events.

In the six years TORC has been presenting sponsor of this event, the Y has seen funds grow year after year. This year’s tournament reached new success, raising more than $168,000 – the most ever raised, surpassing our pre-pandemic fundraising level by at least $70,000. In total, the golf tournament has raised more than $1.9 million dollars since its inception. We look forward to another banner year to celebrate the tournament’s 30th anniversary in 2023.

Barbara Graham, Community Relations Manager and member of the Y’s Golf Committee, lauds Torrance Refinery’s business partners who contributed overwhelmingly to this year’s incredible tournament success. “We are thankful to have strong support and participation from many of our contract partners who also care about our community.” Carl Ellett, TORC’s Economics and Planning Supervisor who serves as Co-Chair of the Y’s Golf Committee, added, “This tournament shows what we see daily at the Refinery – working together, we can make important contributions that shape people’s lives.”

Proceeds from the tournament provide scholarships for families in financial need, providing opportunities for local children to attend summer camp. This helps them build self-confidence, learn leadership skills, and take away life-lasting memories in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Tournament funds also support many other programs like the Y’s Youth Institute, a year-round tech-based learning program with a summer intensive focus on project-based learning, college preparation and pathways to pursue higher education.

The date for the 30th Annual Kids Classic Golf Tournament is May 1, 2023 – get your clubs ready!
