In May, Torrance Refinery employees and contractors joined the Torrance community to support the American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay for Life Torrance (Relay) and their vision of a cancer-free future. The Refinery team led by Operations Manager David Schumann walked to honor the people who passed away from cancer while also demonstrating support for those battling the disease and their caretakers.

An estimated 1.9 million cancer cases were diagnosed in the United States in 2021. Cancer continues to affect the lives of many, including Refinery Operators Junior and Perla Moananu whose recent personal experiences motivated them to participate.

“We lost a relative last year to cancer. At the same time, we are celebrating our niece who beat leukemia a year ago. Our niece is five years old, the same age as our daughter Dovie who participated at the Relay this year with her ballet team. It’s important for all of us to support the Relay for Life because it reminds us how precious life is and how many people are battling cancer. The best part was feeling the appreciation for life from everyone present,” Perla shared.

In addition to TORC’s presence at and sponsorship of the event, Refinery workers also raised funds to help provide supportive services and resources to individuals and families fighting cancer.
