During the summer, a new state-of-the-art burner technology was installed into refinery furnaces. Industry-leading burners were introduced during the maintenance period (referred to in the business as a “Turnaround”). The new burners are designed to significantly reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from refinery heaters. This project was undertaken to maintain compliance with the South Coast Air Quality Management District clean air regulations and the project required 150,000 man-hours of engineering, procurement, and construction.
The newly installed burners are considered the next generation of Ultra Low NOx burners with an enhanced combustion system, which results in cooler combustion temperatures producing very low levels of NOx emissions, and lower NOx emissions are good for the environment.
A cross functional team of employees collaborated to drive this project to successful completion with zero safety incidents and under budget.
